Five of the Best: Premier League Kits

The summer break in football is often painful and feels like it drags on forever, just waiting for football to return.

However, it feels like football is just around the corner again when your beloved club releases their kit for the new season.

Some kits completely blow you away, others make you ask: “what were they thinking?!”

Down the years, the Premier League has produced some incredible kits that the most hardcore football fan will remember fondly.

While some split opinion, there are five standout ones that are some of the best we’ve seen.

5. Liverpool away (2008-09)

Liverpool have had some iconic kits down the years, but their away kit in the 2008-09 season is completely underrated and we haven’t seen many like it.

The kit was an homage to their away kits in the late 1980’s and despite it being grey, which isn’t the best of colours for a kit, they pulled it off fantastically.

Club legend Steven Gerrard had his best goal scoring season this year, scoring 16, and the combination with Fernando Torres was football at its best.

Despite narrowly missing out on the league to an unstoppable Man Utd team, Liverpool fans can look back happily at this season, including on their away kit.

4. West Ham home (1999-2001)

Claret and blue is a famous colour combination with many Premier League clubs.

While Aston Villa and Burnley have produced some golden kits themselves, none of them live up to the West Ham kits down the years.

Regardless of the colours, a kit can be made or ruined by their sponsors.

An unusual but brilliant combination of Fila and Dr. Martens saw West Ham in their best kit which was donned by Paolo Di Canio in his prime.

3. Arsenal away (2003-04)

The red and white strips of Arsenal are classics and some of the best players to grace the league have been seen in them.

However, arguably one of their greatest is their away kit from the 2003-04 season.

That year will, quite rightly, be remembered for Arsenal’s invincibles season, but don’t forget this beauty of an away kit during that perfect season.

Bright yellow is a colour you can’t go wrong with, but Arsenal showed us how to do it this year.

Just a glimpse of this kit gives you flashbacks to Thierry Henry placing the ball gloriously into the bottom corner.

2. Manchester United home (1993-94)

In the early 1990’s, the old Division One was changed into the Premier League.

This also saw the beginning of Man Utd’s dominance in the league, as they won four league titles in the first five years of the Premier League.

The dominance on the field also saw some fine kits come with.

Sharp’s shirt sponsor became synonymous with Man Utd kits for almost two decades, and this one worked perfectly with the typical 1990’s looking shirt.

Eric Cantona’s ‘collar up’ look on the classic kits quickly became incredibly popular, giving this kit the iconic status it deserves.

1. Newcastle United home (1995-97)

So good they wore it twice.

Everything about this kit is perfection – the classic black and white stripes, the Adidas masterpiece and the iconic Newcastle Brown Ale sponsor.

The nostalgia factor takes Newcastle fans back to the days when Alan Shearer, Les Ferdinand and David Ginola graced the field of St. James’ Park.

The kit holds some great memories and still looks fantastic 25 years on.

Without doubt, this is the greatest kit we’ve seen in the Premier League.

It will take something special in the future to knock this off the top.
