Day 2: Wednesday 27 July – Sussex Stakes Day

The Group 1 Sussex Stakes is the main attraction on day two of Glorious Goodwood and it offers a chance for the Classic generation to take on their elders in a one-mile tussle. Amongst the most memorable of recent renewals of this great race was the 2011 ‘Duel on the Downs’ when the great Frankel dispatched reigning champion Canford Cliffs. The late Sir Henry Cecil’s charge would emerge victorious again a year later and remains the only dual winner of the Sussex Stakes.

The Group 2 Molecomb Stakes also features on Wednesday, a real speed test for the two-year-olds over the straight five furlongs that has been won by the likes of Brown Sugar, Kachy and Liberty Beach in recent times.

The Group 2 Lillie Langtry Stakes over a mile is relatively new (2003) and finds its most famous winner to date in Simple Verse, Ralph Beckett’s charge grabbing this prize en route to St Leger glory at Doncaster as a three-year-old. The Group 2 Richmond Stakes is an integral part of the Glorious Goodwood experience and is a fast-paced 6f dash for two-year-old colts.

Day 4: Friday 29 July – King George Day

Speed is perhaps more routinely associated with motorsport in the Goodwood area but it has been hard to beat the pace set by Battash in recent years, winning the King  George’s Stake four times.

The highlight on the final afternoon is the cavalry charge that is the Stewards’ Cup over six-furlongs. The tough handicap routinely attracts a bumper entry and has a first prize in excess of £155,000.

The mercurial Frankie Dettori has won this tough prize twice since 2015 on board Magical Memory and Lancelot Du Lac.
